THE EXTRAORDINARY HEALING POWER OF ORDINARY THINGS

"I used to believe that we must choose between science and reason on one hand, and spirituality on the other, in how we lead our lives. Now I consider this a false choice. We can recover the sense of sacredness, not just in science, but in perhaps every area of life."

--Larry Dossey, M.D.

Long hailed as one of the founders of mind-body medicine, Larry Dossey directs our attention to simple sources of healing that are available all around us in
THE EXTRAORDINARY HEALING POWER OF ORDINARY THINGS:
Fourteen Natural Steps to Health and Happiness.

Texas physician Larry Dossey is an influential advocate of the role of the mind in spirituality and health. Going beyond drugs, surgery, and other expensive and hazardous interventions that don’t work for 90 percent of our aches and pains, Dossey explores the treasures hidden in plain sight whose healing power has been overlooked or forgotten, such as risk-taking, optimism, listening to music, doing nothing while nature takes its course, tears, dirt, and the role of mystery and miracles in our lives.

During his Keynote presentation at the February Just For The Health Of It! Conference in Marina del Rey, Dr. Dossey will examine the potential power of 14 readily accessible sources of well-being, providing a strong case for utilizing such remedies before more extreme measures. His expansive discourse on optimism, forgetting, music, miracles, plants, risk taking and other "simple" things makes clear that, while these are hardly "simple" when fully appreciated, often they are undervalued or completely ignored by the mainstream medical community, which turns to high-tech procedures and worst-case scenarios as a first resort. According to Dossey, a nearly single-minded clinical focus has obscured patients' interpretation of their own experiences, leaving out important clues about how people heal. He provides numerous examples of those who have discovered "spontaneous healing," which most physicians discount or downplay because they defy explanation.

Dr. Larry Dossey will take us on a poetic, well-researched journey into the many paradoxes that are inherent in the human condition and how they relate to healing the body, mind and soul.

Accessible and inspirational, The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things is a welcome report from the front, providing hope for those interested in low-tech, low-cost, and readily available remedies. “Dossey is in the tradition of Richard Selzer, Lewis Thomas, and Oliver Sacks.”
—Rachel Remen, M.D., author of Kitchen Table Wisdom

"Larry Dossey is one of the most remarkable presenters we have had the honor of featuring at our conferences. His clarity and intelligence reach deeply into the hearts and minds of our delegates, giving them transformative understanding and validation that is of great use in creating fulfilled and healed lives."

LARRY DOSSEY, M.D., is a former internist and chief of staff at Medical City Dallas Hospital and former co-chair of the Panel on Mind/Body Interventions, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health. He is the author of the soon to be released and seven other books, including the bestselling Healing Words.

The impact of Dr. Dossey's work has been remarkable. Before his book Healing Words was published in 1993, only three U.S. medical schools had courses devoted to exploring the role of religious practice and prayer in health; currently, nearly 80 medical schools have instituted such courses, many of which utilize Dr. Dossey's works as textbooks. In his 1989 book Recovering the Soul, he introduced the concept of "non-local mind" -- mind unconfined to the brain and body, mind spread infinitely throughout space and time. Since then, "non-local mind" has been adopted by many leading scientists as an emerging image of consciousness. Dr. Dossey's ever-deepening explication of non-local mind provides a legitimate foundation for the merging of spirit and medicine. The ramifications of such a union are radical and call for no less than the reinvention of medicine.
