When you feel lost in the gap between the old and the new, try to see the chaos as integral to change. Remember that intelligence underlies it. We can tap the wisdom of shifting cycles and find our step in the beat of transformation. Consider a fragile sprout that disturbs the soil as it breaks through the earth in its unfurling and ask, “What new life unfolds simultaneous to (and perhaps depends upon) the interruption of familiar and known patterns? How can I nurture the seed of a new me?” Just as vital forces disrupt the soil in thrusting a fresh, green shoot through the earth toward the sun, envisage the spirit of life dismantling old paradigms and awakening Higher Consciousness. You might ask, “How can I evolve and encourage change? How can I inspire others?” Look to your Higher Purpose and your highest dreams for humanity for these answers. Personally, and globally, the sloughing off of the old can feel treacherous and unruly. In walking through these times it is easy to become lost in anger, sadness, or fear, or to numb through addiction or distraction. No extreme is helpful. There is wisdom to our agitation as it can push us to where we need to go. Admitting to the anguish, terror, and rage we feel liberates energy that can be used constructively. This is a profound time of reorganizing. Each of us must find our way and care for ourselves, and each other, as we do. No matter what circumstances swirl around us we can invite our spirit guides and nature to give us strength. These good influences can heal and guide us. It rarely helps to push feelings away. As uncertainty escalates each of us can guide ourselves by the living intelligence of these times, with which we are inseparable, to nourish the tender seedling of a new reality. Within the womb of dissolution quickens a world of untold beauty. As we navigate these times wakefully, it helps to move, laugh, to be light and joyful. There are untold health benefits to laughter and joy. We can access these by being like a child. We can invite our child-self to come out to play every day, even in serious circumstances. An outlandish example is a story told by a Celtic friend whose family held a wake for an elderly uncle who had died. The tone was at first subdued. Soon the mood lifted and the room filled with the small clan’s celebratory sounds as they recalled the loved one’s life. At one point, as relatives stood near the opened casket, one of the remaining uncles peered into the coffin as if investigating his brother’s body. Without turning to face the others he said, “Hmmm. That’s a really nice pair of shoes he has on.” laughed which just egged the old man on, “Yes, that’s a very nice pair of shoes! He certainly doesn’t need those shoes now, but I could use them.” The uncle reached into the casket, then gently untied and removed the dead man’s shoes. The family was at first shocked. Yet, as they were familiar with this one’s antics, the cousins, siblings, uncles and aunts soon laughed until they lost their breath. Some moments later the elderly gentleman peeked into the casket again, “Hmmm. That’s a really nice belt he has on.” We might not desire to do a comedy act at the next funeral, but few of us would argue the therapeutic value of laughing. Our spirits lift when we are happy, our physiology hums and we gain a more spacious angle on the world’s, and our own, problems. Whether we are a spiritualist, activist, or whatever, when we take ourselves, and our views, too seriously we can lose vitality, as if we have sewn shut the entrances to life’s magic and mystery. Contrastingly Einstein, proponents of the new physics, and others expand our view of reality. According to these vantages everything is space and potential. Likewise, the Maya Elders and guides we know remind us that their prophecies are not about destruction, but transformation. The Mayas and other cultures we have worked with tell us this is the portal into a new era that has the potential to create more compassionate and cooperative human societies. The promise of upcoming decades is that we will transition from fixed to more fluid ways, just as the new physics shifts us from a Newtonian world of parts to quantum fields of energy. We must nurture a personal relationship with the living intelligence of these prophecies, beyond trendy or intellectual interpretation, and do our part to make the changeover smooth. A little humor goes a long way to help us rouse the good energy needed to pursue positive change. As we lighten up, adopt a non-linear tack and open our hearts and bodies to epic shifts, it helps to put hopes and fears into perspective. The earth needs our attention, as do other species. It is also ironic to obsess about our own enlightenment, or what catastrophes may befall us in the decades that trail 2012, when most people in undeveloped countries live under daily threat of disease, starvation, poverty, natural disaster and annihilation. Indigenous people the world over have endured crises for centuries. Remarkably, and despite severity of suffering or whether afflicting person or culture, shamans I know never question what is possible and never give up hope. Whether living on the Asian Steppe or in the Amazon Basin, a shaman follows heart, body and soul to heal each circumstance at its root. This burden is ecstatic as it is not taken on alone. The shaman asks the spirits and nature for help. The trees, the flowers, the stones, the earth, and the life force in everything that grows upon the earth, share their power. The healer roots deeply into these forces. When this power grows very strong, the shaman intuits how to direct it for higher good. She or he then transmits these healing forces out to community or patient. Like shamans all over the world we can draw upon our own, and nature’s power, and rely on the spirits, to help us dream and act for higher good. As the shifting of personal and societal dreams forces us out of denial, we can guide ourselves into a future that nourishes not only the human, but also the plant, animal, and mineral species of our planet. No matter how comfortable, those patterns that do not serve the larger environmental and global family, or our own higher good, will not persist. Given this, the reality we know is indeed coming to a close. As in ancient death and rebirthing rites, we may feel as if we are dying as we let go of fantasies about life, and ourselves, to live genuinely. Yet, the richness of being real eases the release of outdated ways. Now is the time to join with like-minded others to dream and act together. We must fix upon the higher paths that open now and walk steadfast in their direction. As we do so, it is vital that humanity remembers it is boundless; we are one with infinite universal potential.
