Music Is the Link Between Worlds
Before we ever see the world, we hear it.
For Aurelio C. Hammer, the first sound was his mother’s heartbeat, heard in the womb. Perhaps it is fitting that he has spent a lifetime listening—to nature, to silence, to vibration, and to the mysterious language of sound.
Born in the Austrian Alps, Aurelio grew up surrounded by nature, where birds announced each new day. He describes himself as being “more on the listening side of life.” His journey with sound has taken him from the study of linguistics and ethnomusicology to the creation of instruments, the exploration of resonance, and decades of listening across cultures and traditions.
For Aurelio, music is far more than something we hear. He experiences it as a reflection of the vibration of existence itself—a medium through which we can connect the material world with inner and higher realms. “Music is the link between worlds.”
This understanding is at the heart of his work creating instruments. For Aurelio, an instrument begins with imagination: a feeling, a pattern, a longing for a particular quality of sound. Through experimentation, material, vibration, and resonance gradually come together until an idea takes form.
He sees this as a co-creative process. The maker listens, experiments, refines, and tunes; the instrument itself seems to reveal what it wants to become. In Auroville, surrounded by trees, stone, wood, metal, birds, wind, and the rhythms of nature, Aurelio seeks to discover and express something of the inherent harmonic structure of the natural world.
Perhaps this is why his work begins with listening.
To listen deeply is to become receptive—to vibration, to resonance, to inspiration, and to the subtle relationships between things. And when we listen in this way, sound can become more than music.
It can become a way of entering the mystery.
ABOUT
Aurelio C. Hammer is a pioneering sound artist, instrument maker, and founder of SVARAM – Musical Instruments & Research in Auroville, India. Born in the Austrian Alps, he has devoted more than three decades to exploring sound as a universal language, its relationship to nature and consciousness, and its potential to support healing and transformation.
His journey began with studies in linguistics and ethnomusicology and deepened through extensive travel and encounters with indigenous sound traditions, sacred music cultures, and spiritual lineages. In 1991, he arrived in Auroville, where he found a place for his continuing exploration of sound, creativity, healing, and human development.
In 2003, Aurelio founded SVARAM as a research center and social enterprise bringing together traditional craftsmanship, contemporary design, and experimental approaches to sound. The center creates more than 120 handcrafted instruments and provides vocational training and opportunities for local youth.
Through his approach, A Sound Approach to Life, Aurelio explores sound as a pathway to greater awareness and well-being. At the Sonorium in Auroville, he creates immersive experiences with instruments of his own design, inviting people to experience sound not simply as something we hear, but as something we can enter, feel, and explore.
His work has been experienced internationally through sound installations, instruments, educational programs, and healing environments. Rooted in Auroville’s vision of conscious evolution, Aurelio continues to explore the meeting place of sound, nature, creativity, and the human journey.
